Biden to Unveil New U.S. Drug Addiction and Overdose Strategy

May 7, 2022

Biden sent his Administration’s inaugural National Drug Control Strategy to Congress at a time when drug overdoses have taken a heartbreaking toll, claiming 106,854 lives in the most recent 12-month period. The Strategy delivers on the call to action in President Biden’s Unity Agenda through a whole-of-government approach to beat the overdose epidemic.

The Strategy focuses on two critical drivers of the epidemic: untreated addiction and drug trafficking. It instructs federal agencies to prioritize actions that will save lives, get people the care they need, go after drug traffickers’ profits, and make better use of data to guide all these efforts.

Dave Marlon, CEO of Vegas Stronger released a statement on the news: "I am grateful that the President presented at the RX Summit in Atlanta that I attended and acknowledged the addiction epidemic. This is on the heals of the Stanford study estimating that 1.2 Million Americans will overdose and die, in addition to the 1 million that have already died.

We appreciate that the National Drug Control Strategy is being updated, and the shorter wait times and longer treatment duration strategies of Vegas Stronger fit very well in this federal strategy.

Vegas Stronger remains both a Naloxone distribution site and a provider that does regular visits to homeless camps and the tunnels distributing Naloxone and doing interventions.

It did make me smile to hear Dr. Rahul Gupta, director of National Drug Control Policy at the White House state that the White House is increasing border security."
