Sober Superstar: Denzel Washington

September 6, 2022

Award-winning actor Denzel Washington gave up alcohol just after his 60th birthday back in 2014. "The Flight" star stated to The Hollywood Reporter, “You start to cut the fat…You live a simpler life. When I turned 60, I looked in the mirror and said, ‘This is it.’ And so I want to hone my mind, body, and spirit and be the best me I can.”

The Fordham University graduate added, “When I turned 60, I had my last glass of wine; haven’t had any since. I just said, ‘You know, I don’t have days to be hung over.’ There’s 365 days in a year, and how many days do you want to waste?”

Washington, who hails from Mt. Vernon, NY, has won two Academy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Tony Award, among an array of others including Black Reel Awards and NAACP Image Awards.

The Hollywood heartthrob has starred in more than 40 leading roles that have generated billions at the box office. Such hits include Cry Freedom, The Mighty Quinn, Mo’ Better Blues, Malcolm X, Mississippi Masala, Crimson Tide, Inside Man and Fences. Now in his 8th year of sobriety, Denzel Washington’s acting career continues to thrive as it always has.
