We Are the Pioneers: How We Treat Homelessness at Its Root

In Las Vegas, the streets tell a story of addiction, homelessness, and mental health struggles that have impacted countless lives. At Vegas Stronger, we exist to write a different ending. And doing that means doing work almost no one else has done before.

We are the pioneers of treatment for the homeless.

That sounds like a bold claim until you understand what sits behind it. As we continually evaluate our own program for efficiency and effectiveness, we keep confronting the same reality: there is very little research anywhere in the country on how to treat people experiencing homelessness. The proven playbook most providers rely on simply does not exist yet. As our Program Director, Safety Officer & Clinician Brandon Light puts it, “The baseline isn’t really there. We’re the ones setting it.”

Reducing Homelessness by Addressing Its Root Causes

Our mission is clear: reduce homelessness in the Vegas Valley. What makes that mission hard is that homelessness is never a single problem with a single fix. There are a lot of factors that go into why someone is experiencing homelessness, and a lot of reasons behind how they would end it.

We understand that the primary drivers are substance use and mental health, but we never let that understanding flatten the person in front of us. Every single client is an individual. So we apply the theoretical principles of therapy to each person’s specific circumstances, and we treat the substance use and the mental health at the same time rather than one after the other. It is evidence-based care built around the individual, not the average.

Helping Now: Immediate Access to Treatment

We have a few things we call our “secret sauce.” The first is immediate access to treatment, and it sets us apart from most other providers.

The reasoning comes straight from how recovery actually begins. When someone decides they are ready for help, that readiness does not last forever. There is a small window to reach them, understand their barriers, and get them started on a path forward. If we miss that window, the client leaves and often never comes back.

So we remove the wait entirely. There are no long waiting lists and no unnecessary delays. When someone is ready to reclaim their life, our door is already open.

Integrated Care, All Under One Roof

The second piece is our integrated model, and it is where our belief in treating the whole person becomes something you can see and walk through.

When a client comes in, they are not handed off to a single provider. They meet a therapist or substance use counselor, and they also connect with a case manager, peer support, psychiatric prescribers, MAT prescribers, and primary care. Alongside the clinical care are the things that keep people engaged and rebuilding: boxing, a gym, theater. The mix keeps evolving as we learn what works.

All of it lives under one building.

That single design choice removes two of the most common reasons treatment fails before it can take hold. Our clients do not have to arrange transportation across town for each separate need, and they do not lose hours navigating disconnected appointments and systems. The transportation barrier and the time barrier both come down, and the path to recovery gets shorter.

Setting the Standard, One Life at a Time

Put the pieces together and the Vegas Stronger difference comes into focus. A population with layered, deeply individual needs. A field without a proven roadmap. And a program that treats substance use and mental health together, opens its doors the moment someone is ready, and gathers every service a person might need in one place.

Founded in 2014, we have grown from a single outpatient program into a comprehensive, multi-level provider. Our clients receive an average of 5.5 months of care, with progress tracked every week. We are not waiting for the research to tell us what works. We are doing the work, helping people reclaim their lives, and building the evidence as we go.

We’re the ones setting it. That is the whole idea, and for the most underserved people in Las Vegas, it is the difference between a closed door and a second chance.
