Boots on the Ground: How We Reach People the System Leaves Behind

Recovery does not begin at our front doors. For many of the people we serve, it begins in a tunnel, at a railroad track, or inside a jail cell, in the exact places the rest of the world has stopped looking. That is where our outreach work lives, and it is where the Vegas Stronger difference starts.

“I’m pretty much the boots on the ground,” says Darlene Cui, our shelter outreach specialist. “I go into the railroad tracks. I go into the tunnels. I go into Clark County Detention Center, the city jails, NDOC.”

This is what compassionate, assertive outreach actually looks like. We do not wait for the most underserved people in Las Vegas to find us, because the people who need us most are rarely in a position to come looking. So we go to them, into the encampments and the corrections facilities, and we bring the message that no one is beyond help.

Darlene brings something to that work that cannot be taught. She has 22 years in recovery, and she carries it into every conversation.

“I get to sit with the inmates and let them know there is a light at the end of the tunnel for them, that’s reachable for them,” she says. There is a second truth folded into her work, and she names it plainly: “I get to rescue me on a daily basis.” Staying in service is part of what keeps her well, and that is exactly why our clients believe her when she tells them recovery is possible.

The Moment of Release

There is one moment where a life can turn in either direction, and most systems miss it entirely. It is the moment someone walks out of a jail or a detention center with nowhere safe to go.

For too many people, that is the moment the cycle restarts. Released to the same streets, with the same barriers and no bridge to anything better, they end up right back where they started.

We built our outreach to catch people in exactly that moment. As Darlene puts it, “If they release to the streets and they don’t have a safe place to go, their date doesn’t change, their time changes. Release to Vegas Stronger. Let us come pick you up.”

That is not a slogan. It is a standing offer and a real logistics chain. We coordinate directly with jails and detention centers so that release does not mean returning to the street. It can mean a ride straight to treatment and a safe place to begin again.

Through the Golden Doors

When that ride ends at our building, the people stepping out are met the same way, from the very first second.

What makes us different from other teams is the compassion and empathy our staff brings from the beginning, from the moment a client walks through our golden doors. And because nearly everyone here is in recovery themselves, that welcome is not a script. It comes from people who remember their own first walk through a door like this one.

That shared experience is what helps a client get to the other side. It is hard to believe recovery is reachable when the person telling you so has never been where you are. It is much harder to doubt it when they have.

From the tunnels to the jail cells to the golden doors, the through line is the same. We meet people exactly where they are, and we walk with them the rest of the way. For someone who had every reason to believe no one was coming, that is the difference between another cycle and a way out.
