April Adams serves as our Grant Writer and Administrator, and describes her position here at Vegas Stronger, “I have written three books, two of them on addiction. As a writer and a recovering addict and alcoholic, this role is a perfect fit for me.” Adams has lived all over the United States, but always comes back to Las Vegas, and can’t imagine living anywhere else.
Adams was put into treatment for alcoholism in her late 20’s and subsequently dealt with a methamphetamine addiction. She states, “I know the struggle it is to have an invisible force compelling you to do things that could potentially ruin your life. Onlookers look at you, shake their heads, and say ‘just stop.’ Addiction is not a moral failure. You can’t just stop. Addiction doesn’t discriminate. It affects young, old, rich, poor, tall, and short. The addict living under a bridge could be me. It could be you.”
Adams’ most rewarding part of her day is seeing the faces of the people we help, sometimes due to a grant we’ve been awarded. She plans to enhance funding so we can achieve our mission; as the more we grow, the more funding our NonProfit Organization will need. Our Grant Writer and Administrator concludes, “The best way to help the homeless population in Sin City is to encourage them to get into a shelter and into treatment.”
